ENVINET monitoring uranium mines

SARA and MIRA provide radiological safety for uranium mines

The Empresa De Desenvolvimento Mineiro (EDM) in Portugal is relying on SARA and MIRA with regard to the remediation of abandoned uranium mines. The measuring systems supplied by our partner Ambifirst are documenting the success of the remedial action and paving the way for a risk evaluation. The high uranium content of the ores leads to emissions of uranium, thorium and their daughter nuclides and is thereby responsible for an increase of radiation in the area. The good news is that the current remedial action will eliminate this additional burden for the environment and local population.

Thanks to its 3" NaI detector, SARA Water ensures the real-time monitoring of the nuclide-specific activity of the water in the former mines. The typical nuclides of the uranium-radium and thorium decay chain, Pb-214, Bi-214, Th-232, U-238 etc., can be found in the waterways under surveillance.
Semi-mobile, fully autonomous MIRA systems with GPS are also monitoring the local dose rate during the remedial action. This ensures that all contaminants are logged in full and documented systematically. The state-of-the-art web application NMC is used to visualize the readings and manage the measuring systems.
